Ensignia checks in with our secure server once a month to verify if your license is still valid. If you cancel your subscription payments, Ensignia will continue to work and your clients / employees won't be cut off from their webmail, but they will not have access to the colorful skins you purchased. Without a valid license, Ensignia will use the grayscale Monochrome skin for all the users, regardless of what skin is selected in the display options. This is pretty much equivalent to running SquirrelMail instead of Ensignia: no designer skins and no special handling of mobile devices.
